This month we are going to have something a little different. A recent post on our group indicated that while current Scala developers were pretty well served by the advanced topics normally presented at BASE meetings, there hasn't been any beginner material for a while. Quite right! So, this month we are going to do beginners night. David Pollak will give an overview of Scala for beginners - David is well known for creating the Lift web framework, and the Stambecco enterprise framework, and also for his book Beginning Scala. This will optionally be an interactive, follow-along session so if you want to install Scala 2.8.0 final on your laptop prior to the meeting, be prepared to join in and try things out. We will also have an install-fest/help area in the room, where people who are having trouble getting started with Scala or who maybe just want to move to the next step, can get help from people with a little more experience. If you are a regular BASE attendee, and would like to offer your services to help people get started (I can think of nothing more important in the current Scala ecosystem than getting developers from other languages interested), then please come prepared to help out. This could mean anything from helping people troubleshoot problems with the Scala REPL/IDEs, thru helping get their programs working, to answering philosophical questions on why Scala has a whole new collections library. If you are interested in Scala - maybe following this site or Google group, but have not yet taken the plunge, this is the perfect opportunity to do so - we are here to help (and you will find the Scala community is very friendly and welcoming). If you have friends or co-workers who you think might be interested in this, please bring them along. LinkedIn is kindly providing facilities and pizza for the event. Since the room hops around a little at LinkedIn, I will announce the final details of which meeting room we will be using soon, but in the meantime, please look at the following map: Since the room will be somewhere around this courtyard (we will make sure signs are up on the main lobby door to direct you as well). There will be some time for lightning talks prior to the main talk, so if you have something you want to talk about - come prepared to give us 5 minutes on it. Thanks, and see you there. The room is the main big presentation area called "Unite" at 2025 Stierlin Ct. just up the stairs past the entrance. As you enter from Shoreline Blvd, and drive down Stierlin, this building will be on your right BEFORE you get to the big courtyard. |
